The Detention Service was set up to :
cater for the operation of all closed accommodation centres;
provide secure but humane accommodation for detained persons;
maintain a safe and secure environment.
Immigrants remain in these centres until their identity is established and their application for asylum is processed. If their application for the award of protected status is successful they are released and transferred to an open accommodation centre.
If not, their stay in the closed centre may extend up to a maximum of 18 months.
