PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR HOME AFFAIRS, NATIONAL SECURITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT: Malta and Turkey discuss areas of collaboration in the Mediterranean

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri had a meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defence Hulusi Akar regarding the security situation of the Mediterranean region. The discussions were part of an official visit by a delegation of the Turkish government led by Minister Akar.
The ministers discussed potential areas of collaboration in the Mediterranean region in terms of security and law enforcement. Both countries agreed to work together on matters related to the prevention of crime, including people smuggling. They also discussed the importance of maintaining stability in the Mediterranean region, with special reference to the situation in Libya.
Minister Camilleri said that Turkey is an important partner for Malta and the European Union. Malta will continue to call for dialogue and compromise at an EU level in all those matters which affect the two sides directly.
On irregular migration, Minister Camill​eri acknowledged that both countries face specific challenges which are highly dependent on the security situation in the Mediterranean region. Malta believes that peace and stability in countries of transit are the only solutions to address the exploitation of human beings by criminal smuggling networks.
